Welcome Home to Midlothian, Texas

Called DFW's Southern Star, Midlothian has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s when this enclave in the Republic of Texas was called Peter's Colony. Those settlers profited by trapping and trading, as well as farming and cattle ranching. The name Midlothian reportedly came from a homesick Scottish train engineer who observed how much the area resembled his homeland. Midlothian was officially incorporated as part of Ellis County in 1888. One of the city's assets was its location at the crossroads of two railroad lines and, eventually, two regional highways. This boosted the local economy by attracting shops and manufacturing facilities. Midlothian sits close to the highest elevation in Ellis County on a thick chalk ridge which covers a massive limestone reserve. Today, the area's largest employers are the three cement plants built to utilize this natural resource.

The population of Midlothian is 16,850, which is up 125 percent in the past 10 years, and it is estimated to double again by 2020. The city is just 26 miles south of Dallas and 27 miles southeast of Fort Worth, making it an easy commute to either destination. Residents here also benefit from two excellent local medical centers, regional airport, 11 parks, 15 schools, a golf course, nearby Joe Pool Lake and Navarro College. As Midlothian prospers, city planners ensure that the community retains the small-town charm that makes it unique.
