• With their significant financial stake in the value of their homes, owners do more to deter crime in their neighborhoods.
• Home owners get involved in community activities and groups, showing more devotion to civic duty than renters.
• In one study, people who recently became home owners reported higher life satisfaction, higher self-esteem, and higher perceived control over their lives.
• Home owners also enjoy better physical and psychological health, according to research.

The 2010 NAR Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers report shows that 53 percent of first-time home buyers were primarily motivated by the desire to own a home. Low mortgage rates, rising incomes and stable prices also spurred them to action. One third of first-time buyers decided to buy a home when they did because homes were most affordable at that time.
